How to Choose the Right Paint for Your Nursery

One of the most exciting parts of preparing for a new baby is decorating the nursery, and the first step is a fresh coat of paint on the nursery walls. But which paint should you choose? Is color the only difference between paint brands, or are there other factors to keep in mind?

Low VOC or No VOC Paint

Consider choosing a paint containing low or no volatile organic compounds, or VOCs. VOCs have been linked to health problems ranging from headaches to cancer. These paints can be safer for use around children since they emit fewer potentially harmful gases.

View Samples at Home

Take several paint chips home and look at them at different times of day and from different angles in the nursery, so that you can see how they might look under changing conditions. Once you have selected your top favorite colors, buy a sample jar of each one. Paint several swatches on the walls and evaluate them. This will help you decide which color looks best, and how well the new paint will cover the existing wall color.

Painting your nursery can be a lot of work, but the finished room will be worth the effort if you are careful to choose the right paint.
